Thank you for your interest in Special Spaces. Since 2004, we have added 35 chapters across the country—all run by volunteers eager to give a child with a life-threatening condition a special space of their own. If you do not find a location near you or are interested in starting a Special Spaces chapter in your area, please contact the regional director closest to you. We look forward to hearing from you.
Kathy Schmidt, Milwaukee Northshore Director
Back in 2011 is when I first became aware of Special Spaces. I was watching an episode of the Secret Millionaire one Sunday evening that it featured the work done by Special Spaces Knoxville. That episode inspired me to reach out and help. I called Jennifer Swain – the founder of this amazing organization and she encouraged us to become the first Wisconsin affiliate. We applied to become an affiliate and a couple months later we did our first Special Spaces Room! My Dad and 2 brothers as well as our employee Andrew helped launch our chapter here in Mequon, based out of our family Home Building Business, Embassy Homes. Jennifer Swain knew it was meant to be as she grew up in Wisconsin and her sister in law Ann Swain actually lived here in Mequon, only minutes from our office. She put me in touch with Ann and we quickly became great friends and she joined our team and our family! The rest is history! Thank You Special Spaces for allowing us to “give back” through this amazing organization.
Mike Bailey, Green Bay Director
Personally, I’ve always believed that with a positive attitude you can achieve anything. So, if I can give my talents to brighten a child’s situation, it’s the least I can do. When you are on the receiving end of this type of generosity, great things happen. Of course, Special Spaces volunteers are just creative people making life better for others. A simple philosophy…

Cindy Thota, Milwaukee West Director
Hello My Name is Cindy Thota. My Husband Raj and I have 2 children Adam and Lexi and we live on Lake Denoon in Muskego. I have the best job in the World!! We get to help a struggling sick child and family have a safe, organized and FUN place to heal. Special Spaces is an organization based on families helping families. Can’t get any better then that. My volunteer team is truly amazing. Every time we do a room we get back more from the families then we could ever give!! Hugs are the best!!
Ann Decker, Dubuque Iowa Director
My husband Rick and I have two boys Jakob 15 and Brandon 10. I started the Dubuque chapter in 2014. I have always been involved in organizations that help children. When I learned about Special Spaces I knew this was something very special and my family could be a part of it with me. We’re helping children going through something difficult and my children are learning to give back and be compassionate. It’s been an amazing journey and I’m so grateful to be a part of Special Spaces!
DeLane Crawford, Milwaukee Lake Country Director
My name is DeLane Crawford and I live in Oconomowoc, WI with my husband and three daughters.
I volunteer because it’s a great feeling to be a part of a team that can take a couple of days time and talent to create a “special space” for a well deserving child and family to call their own. A place they can relax, heal, and enjoy while not thinking of doctor appointments and hospital visits.
It is very rewarding to see what an impact our organization has on a family.
Holly DeLong, Fox Valley Director
We have lived in Appleton for 17 years (my husband is from here). Mike and I have been married for 30 years we have two children and four grandchildren. They are a big part of my life. I spend all my time volunteering with about 10 nonprofits here in the valley. I find it very rewarding and I love being paid with hugs and a thank you. My mission is to make someone smile every day.
