It seems like just yesterday we expanded this mission to Wisconsin, and already we’ve created a total of 75 SPECIAL SPACES!!! Leonard’s Lego Turtle Special Space

Leonard's Special Space

6-year-old Leonard loves Legos and turtles. Leonard shares a bedroom with his two brothers, 4-year-old Simon and baby James. Leonard and Simon were totally over the moon when they saw this fun hand painted wall mural by Crayons Gone Wild Murals. Leonard has been an avid fighter against cancer since his diagnosis and we truly hope he is able to heal, find comfort and peace in his new special space.

Leonard's Special Space

“This whole experience was an absolute blessing. My kids thought you were just Heaven on Earth and my husband and I are so grateful for your hard work.” ~ Leonard’s Mom

We’d like to extend a SUPER BIG THANK YOU to Team Leonard, which included many of our favorite Northwestern Mutual volunteers, they are always so uplifting and such an amazing group to work with!

Isaac’s Minecraft Special Space

Issac's Special SpaceIsaac is a very sweet 8-year-old boy that enjoys fishing, soccer, and playing video games. Isaac’s dream bedroom was a Minecraft fishing themed room. His favorite item in the room was the TNT throw pillow on his bed. Isaac was super excited when he discovered that his bed elevated. Children are very special souls and they teach us important lessons; although he is battling cancer, Issac always keeps a positive attitude and a smile on his face.

Elysia’s Sparkly Special Space

Elysia's Team Sparkle9-year-old Elysia is a gentle soul who didn’t have any particular requests for her makeover. She and her sister, Josie, are unbelievably close and share the same bedroom. One could finish the others sentences, almost like twins. Green Bay Director, Mike Bailey, chose All Things That Shine for the room theme because they have become ‘TEAM SPARKLE’ to overcome Elysia’s cancer diagnosis. They always wear their sparkly attire to her treatments and doctor appointments. Special Spaces Green Bay will be providing them with organizational items, and fun places to hang out within their room makeover.

Happy Halloween

Halloween Safety TipsHalloween is one of the best nights of the year for kids! It’s easy to understand why… when else do they get to dress up as their favorite character, collect candy to their heart’s content, and stay up past their bedtime? Of course, we all want kids to enjoy a hauntingly fun night, but – safety first! Here are four easy tips to help ensure the night is full of treats rather than tricks.

1. Plan trick-or-treating route in advance: Map out a route before leaving the house. Stick to paths that you and your child are familiar with to avoid getting lost. Be sure to wear comfy shoes!

2. Stay well lit: Apply reflective tape to your child’s costume to ensure they are seen by drivers on the road. Also, carry a flashlight with you to keep your child’s path lit at all times.

3. Avoid uncomfortable masks: Masks can make it difficult for your child to see or breathe. If possible, skip the mask altogether and use non-toxic make-up to complete the costume instead.

4. Check your child’s candy: When sorting through candy at the end of the night, be sure to throw away any candy that is not in its original wrapper, or looks as though it has been opened or tampered with.

~ When witches go riding, and black cats are seen,
the moon laughs and whispers, ’tis near Halloween. ~

Good Neighbor Day

Good Neighbor DayNational Good Neighbor Day is observed annually on September 28. This day was created to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of a good neighbor.

Not so long ago, the world felt like a smaller place, and everybody knew everybody else in their neighborhood. Now, many of us aren’t familiar with our neighbors, and only speak to them in passing. Why not use Good Neighbor Day as an opportunity to lend a proverbial cup of sugar, and get to know the people who live nearby?

~ It is a blessing to have a good neighbor but it is even a greater thing to BE a good neighbor. ~

Back To School

It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. Your child might already know a lot of kids in their classes on the first day. But it’s a great day to make a new friend, so encourage them to say hello to kids they know and also to new ones they don’t know yet. They’ll be glad they did and so will their new friend!

Special Spaces Wisconsin

Our Special Spaces team had a great time collaborating with Make-A-Wish Wisconsin on Charlie’s dream bedroom makeover! Charlie choose a Star Wars theme which provided a galaxy of inspiration. Ken and Judy from Crayons Gone Wild Murals did an amazing job turning Charlie’s room into the main deck of the Millennium Falcon complete with Chewbacca and BB-8 on board. Charlie will enjoy endless play and study time at his new desk. We were delighted to help Make-A-Wish Wisconsin grant Charlie’s wish and hope to work with them on more wishes in the future. 🙂

Luke’s Basketball Special Space

Green Bay Special Spaces has made this summer extra special for many kids. Luke, like many teens his age, is an avid basketball fan. His team expanded this theme to every corner of his room while adding small details throughout to create a very inspiring bedroom.

A very special thanks goes out to all of the volunteers for Luke’s bedroom makeover. Two things that made this group so impressive: the teens worked just as hard, if not harder than the adults, and their dedication was appreciated. One of the teen volunteers Claire was a recipient of Special Spaces last year, so she was paying-it-forward to another teen this year! To ALL of the volunteers: we couldn’t have completed this room without your help, THANK YOU!!!

Noah’s Sporty Special Space

Noah is an amazing soft spoken 16-year-old. You would never know by looking at him that he is a fighter. He has fought brain cancer twice and beaten it! Noah truly deserved a space where he can relax and enjoy life. Noah said his new sporty/videogame dream bedroom is better than he could have ever imagined. Although we’re not certain what part is his favorite; perhaps it’s his Milwaukee Brewer Jonathan Lucroy autographed jersey!

Noahs Sporty Special Space

Team Noah Special SpacesSpecial thanks to Cedarburg’s Boy Scout Troop 830 and their parents for helping out as volunteers for Noah’s special space. We also had a “guest” volunteer-Matt Riley, a former Boy Scout who battled cancer years ago. He told his story of his cancer to the boys and how he continued to work on becoming an Eagle Scout during his treatment. He also stayed and helped us with the project. The boys really enjoyed working with him, this was the highlight of the day!
